Black Wednesday in Lagos: as tragic Accident Claims Lives and Injures Several on Eko Bridge, Lagos

9th of August, 2023

An unfortunate and fatal accident occurred today on the Eko Bridge, heading towards the Alaka area of Lagos, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving five individuals seriously injured. Responding swiftly to the incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) collaborated with various emergency responders to provide immediate assistance at the scene.

Mr. Akinde Olusola, also known as 'Zebra', of LASTMA Zone 3 Iponri, led the rescue efforts and confirmed the distressing outcome of the accident. The collision involved a total of six vehicles, including a heavily loaded 'MAC' truck bearing the registration number T-1501 LA. The preliminary investigation suggests that the truck was traveling at a high speed and collided with five other vehicles, including a commercial mini bus (locally known as a 'Korope'), due to brake failure.

Regrettably, two lives were lost - a male and a female - while five others sustained serious injuries. Promptly, the injured victims and the deceased were transported to a nearby General Hospital by an ambulance from the Lasema Response Unit (LRU).

The vehicles involved in the tragic accident are as follows:

1. Fully loaded truck with registration T-150 IL

2. Lexus Jeep with registration LSP 795 EW

3. Toyota Camry with registration AKD 606 HH

4. Toyota with registration LND 217 GX

5. Mini-bus with registration FKJ 77 YG

6. Mini-bus with registration LSR 952 HZ

Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, the General Manager of LASTMA, issued a cautionary statement, urging all motorists, especially truck drivers, to ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition before embarking on journeys within the state. Emphasizing the agency's commitment to educating drivers, especially those of commercial vehicles, about the perils of over speeding, Mr. Oreagba expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

The scene of the accident was attended by a coordinated effort of emergency responders, including the Lasema Response Unit (LRU), Federal Road Safety Corps, and officers from the Iponri Divisional Police Station.
