Humanitarian Crises: Dr Betta Edu Seeks Collaboration With Interior Ministry On Internal Security, Human Trafficking And Migration.

On Tuesday, September 12th, 2023, a significant joint meeting took place between the Director General of NAPTIP, Prof Fatima Waziri-Azi, and key representatives from the Federal Ministry of Interior and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The meeting, presided over by the Honorable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, aimed to foster collaboration between these ministries and their respective agencies.

During the proceedings, the Honorable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, commended the Ministry of Interior for its dedication to realizing the current administration's vision. She emphasized the importance of government agencies working cohesively toward shared objectives. Dr. Edu highlighted the need for NAPTIP, which recently gained approval to operate at airports, to collaborate closely with sister agencies like the Nigeria Immigration Service to combat human trafficking and irregular migration, which continue to affect young Nigerians.

In response, the Honorable Minister of Interior, Dr. Tunji-Ojo, expressed his warm welcome to Dr. Edu and her team, emphasizing the significance of this meeting in his tenure. He pledged his ministry's full support to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and all of its associated agencies. Dr. Tunji-Ojo proposed the establishment of a joint Inter-Ministerial Committee to address the challenges faced by agencies like NAPTIP, emphasizing that this committee would enhance communication and cooperation. Dr. Betta Edu endorsed this proposal.

The meeting concluded with closing remarks from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Oluwatoyin Akinlade. She extended her gratitude to both ministers and stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between the ministries and their agencies. Regarding human trafficking and irregular migration, Dr. Akinlade affirmed the Ministry of Interior's commitment to working closely with NAPTIP, particularly in light of its new presence at airports. She assured the ministers that the Inter-Ministerial Committee would be promptly established to address these critical issues.

Among the other agencies in attendance were the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, as well as key directors from both ministries. This meeting marked a significant step towards enhancing coordination and cooperation in addressing pressing societal challenges in Nigeria.
